resin:
Polyester resins are made from dicarboxylic acids and dihydroxy alcohols and they release Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC's) which are dangerous fumes and odours into the atmosphere when they harden, which are toxic for your health and the environment.
Epoxy resin, also made from petroleum-based chemicals, was the new alternative material that became popular in surfboard construction in the early 1980's. Epoxy resins have about 75% fewer VOC's than polyester resin and about two-thirds fewer VOC's released into the atmosphere when curing. Epoxy resin can also be cleaned up with organic citrus cleaners rather than flammable and toxic chemicals such as acetone.
I have gone one step further, and used Entropy resin for my Eco board, which is the most bio-based resin available, made from renewal plant-based carbon. The production of Entropy resin compared to petroleum-based resin minimises harmful by-products and reduces greenhouse gas emissions and ultimately reduces the carbon footprint of the surfboard.
Entropy resin has the lowest Volatile Organic Content of any bio-based epoxy which makes it the 'greenest' resin available.
