Why go Eco?

Whilst working in our family business and watching the commercial production of hundreds of surfboards over many years, and the care and caution that is required in their production,  I have come to learn that there is a large amount of waste and toxic chemicals that go into creating a surfboard.

From the polystyrene blanks and the foam dust created in the shaping process, to the toxic resin and the by-products left after a board is built - all of this finds its way into the earth via landfill or waterways and pollutes the oceans, harming marine life.  Therefore I decided to collaborate with Kane Tankard of Ocean Foam in Rye, Victoria, to create Australia’s first eco and sustainable, sugar cane surfboard.

Today's surfboards are made from a variety of materials, some including toxic chemicals. However an issue that people in the surfboard industry face today is the matter of the environmental impact versus the performance of a surfboard. Even though polystyrene and fibreglass make a light, easily maneuverable board, the amount of pollution and chemicals that find its way into the air and ocean is not sustainable. The real question we need to ask ourselves is, "Are willing to keep creating waste, burning chemicals and sending toxins into the earth and water when there is a more sustainable solution?"
